The Author of the book attempts to explain the reasons of the present social stratification, including, most of all, weakening of the middle class. Nowadays, at least in developed countries, this is the social class that undergoes a crisis. While the process has not affected developing countries yet, it may be feared it is going to be experienced there soon as well. Examples in this respect flow from above i.e. they penetrate down from the countries ranked as the global leaders. Statistics alone are discomforting, but still bleaker picture results from the analysis of sources and processes that lead to widening gaps. Anybody interested in that phenomenon knows about facts – but as far as their reasons are concerned, the knowledge is inadequate. According to the Author, the processes responsible for the social stratification are the same that have become the crucial signs of our days, i.e. globalization, securitization, digitization and computerization. Methods of their operation may differ, but they all have one thing in common – basically they are completely divergent from expectations and views deeply rooted in the social awareness. Basing on this assumption, the structure of the book has been based upon overcoming the existing beliefs, presented as mirages.
