Sustainable development became a global strategy. Its basic challenge includes energy savings, limited air pollutions, effective use of resources, retaining human resources and the social agreement. The phenomenon of intensifying imbalance between socio-economic development and the state of natural resources is the source of making the sustainable development a buzzword now. The more so, because it is bringing the major risk of the economic, ecological, social and political instability.

The purpose of the paper is to indicate the main directions and possibilities of transport development in the light of sustainable development in urban areas. Amongst the causes of the development of sustainable transport, one can indicate new legal regulations, growing environmental awareness of the society, creation of new models of cooperation or the network effect.

Keywords: sustainable transport; sustainable economic development; new models of collaboration
