The principal objective of the book is to verify an opinion, formed in 1960s, that a low inflation (or better still, its total absence) is capable of providing a market-based economy with optimum conditions for stable economic growth in the long run, with full employment and complete use of labor and production resources. In practice this idea means that by controlling just one macro-economic variable (i.e. the growth of prices) it is possible to eradicate most problems with which the economies of industrialized countries temporarily have to cope. On the basis of thus defined research objective a thesis was formulated that the potential of the policy of direct inflation target which regards maintenance of inflation rates at a low level as the crucial priority of the stabilization policy has been depleted and such a policy should be replaced with new solutions which support economic invigoration and counteract economic stagnation, while reckoning stabilization of prices as an important supplementary objective. The structure of the book was subordinated to the achievement of this research objective. After analytical chapters which are an attempt at an independent and at the same time critical approach to the economic outcomes of complete price stability and moderate inflation, subsequent chapters present verification of methods (strategies) through which contemporary economies react to inflation phenomena. Finally, last chapters point out inflation at levels not slowing down the economic growth as an alternative method of analysis and formulation of monetary policy.

The book is addressed to students and lecturers in faculties of economics, as well as to business practitioners, and any reader interested in general issues of economics.
